4th Book Fair in Istria

7th - 17th December, 1998
Forum, Diana and Cvajner galleries and Mladost bookstore

In the constant search for premises, the Fair returned to the Forum and settled in tree pavilions: Diana gallery, the former cult bookstore Mladost and Cvajner gallery. The circle of the book spaces on the atique squre was closed by the old-fashioned, romantic bookmobile from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

137 publishers from Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as the renowned art book publisher „Taschen“ from Cologne participated in the fourth Fair. More than 7000 titles were included into the comprehensive catalogue. Ever more diverse accompanying programmes of the Fair were enriched by the musician Dario Marušić and choreographer Slavica Šenk.

Along with book presentations, the Fair was accompanied by two exhibitions: Milan Legović's Ex libris and the exhibition of photographs used in the book Basilica of Eufrasius in Poreč by Alifi Klarić. The first performance within the fair also took place – „Una, Take Me Along, Too“.

The fourth Fair was visited by more then 40 000 book-fans.

This was also the dark year of introducing V.A.T., the most difficult year for the Croatian book in the '90s and the hardest year for the Fair in Pula. It is still not clear enough how the Fair survived that year. The supersticious attribute this to various events and „signs“ – especially to Mate Balota's (Istrian poet) verses witch were, at the same time, the Fair's motto.

„The life is beautiful only if sacrified without fear.“
